Mango has been working as an ambulanceman for over 34 years. He loves participating in triathlons, and has won numerous medals over the years. It has never occurred to him that he would suffer from pain in his knee joints. Not only did he have to stop playing sports, he also had to bear with pain when going up and down the stairs. A year of searching and trying different treatment options had no success. He deeply worried that he had to undergo knee replacement surgery, and that artificial implants would affect his mobility, restricting him from participating in sports activities in future.
Mango insisted on finding out the cause of his knee pain, and finally discovered that the pain was caused by Bow Legs. Fortunately, after being evaluated by his doctor, his condition was suitable to undergo High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO), a procedure which would help reduce the pressure on his knee joints. The procedure would enable him to retain his knee joints and yet avoid the possible limitations that could cause by artificial joints. After continuous rehabilitation, Mango overcame the pain caused by Bow Legs, and was able to return to his work and resume sports such as running, swimming and hiking.
In fact, Bow Legs affect not only the appearance, and this can occur in all age and gender groups. Even athletes may suffer from it. If not diagnosed and treated in time, it will increase the pressure on the knee joints in the long term, resulting in knee pain and even arthritis. Eventually, a knee replacement surgery may be required.
High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) could be an alternative to knee replacement surgery. However, to achieve optimal treatment outcomes, it must be performed when the knee joints are not seriously deteriorated. It not only reduces the impact on daily activities after surgery, but also allows those athletic patients to regain the joy of playing sports.
